Why do my shirts get different colored stains on them when I wash them?

It could be from an old washer, leaving rust on the clothes, or it could be rusty water.
Maybe your washer hates you?
If you already check your pockets, and are sure there is nothing in them when you wash your clothes I can only think of one other possible cause. It could have to do with the type of water you are using, whether it’s softened or from a well. As far as detergent goes, I would try Tide. Consumer Reports says it’s the best.

it could be the other colors in the shirts, the washer or the detergents. that happens to me alot.
Quit using the Clorox!!!!! Use the Clorox for whites only. And when you use it dilute one cup of Clorox in at least 1 quart of water for about 15 minutes then add it to your wash water BEFORE you put the clothes in. OKAY? That will stop the funny stains and or holes in your clothes. I don’t care if it says Clorox for color clothes. DON’T USE IT ON COLOR CLOTHES!!!

hhmm Ryan, I am not sure exactly, but if it were on whites, I know that liquid fabric softener will leave dark stains almost blue in color on whites…that is certain and it *****….
I would have to agree with two of the previous answers. Avoid using clorox on colors, period. And don’t pour any kind of soap directly on your dry clothes. Always pour the detergent and even fabric softener into the water or detergent compartment (if your machine has one), which will be flushed with water.
It could be color from the tags bleeding, or from any embellishments on the item, such as an embroidered logo of some sort or a binding (near the neck, for instance) that is a different color. It’s not uncommon for those colors to transfer, especially on a new white shirt. I find that washing everything inside out sometimes is beneficial. You might also try washing the new items separately, which could help you narrow down the cause of the problem. I hope this helps.
If there was no other clothes in the washer with there colors then I have no clue. But to prevent this from happening, when you get new shirts, read the label inside and make sure it is washable not Dry Clean Only. and then take them and give them a rinse with water and 1/2 cup of salt . this will prevent it from bleeding so the color will stay in the shirt and not anywhere else.
